Want to know the secret to maintaining newly laid sod? Water, water and water. But really, consistent watering is key in growing healthy sod. Below we break down newly laid sod care from the day it’s laid to a month and beyond.
Immediately after installing sod water thoroughly for 45-60 minutes to make it spongey to the step.
Water every three to four hours, moving the sprinkler every hour for large areas.
Water areas near buildings, driveways, and sidewalks as they reflect heat drying the grass faster.
New sod needs a 1/4 inch of water each day.
Stay off the sod as much as possible to allow it to take root. You may walk on the lawn to move sprinklers.
Do not mow or fertilize your lawn just yet.
Avoid watering into the evening as this can create a fungus problem.
In the second week your lawn needs ¼ inch of water every other day.
Before watering mow the lawn as needed. Do not exceed over 1/3 of the grass length while cutting. In general keep the lawn at 2″ to 2.5″ during root establishment.
Leave grass clippings to add moisture and nutrients back to the soil.
In the third week water every third day
The fourth week water every fourth day.
After 2 weeks stage the lawn should be well rooted and can take normal wear and tear.
You may apply a balanced fertilizer 6 weeks after instillation.
